  1. Hi Jolie, I think it is awesome you are so well traveled. Every summer for the past summers I have gone to the Caribbean Islands. The scenery is beautiful. Although, I am not sure if this is the case, but in St. Maarteen, their accents are so heavy it is hard to communicate sometimes due to the language barrier. Another thing we have in common is that I as well know sign language, my sister taught me in high school (the alphabet and a few words is all I remember). This semester I hope to learn more about SLA (Second Language Acquisition). According to Ortega, “SLA studies a wide variety of complex and influences and phenomena that contribute to the puzzling range of possible outcomes when learning an additional language in a variety of contexts.” (Ortega, 20.11. Pg. 2)

    1. Jessica,
Thank you so much for reviewing my profile! Yes, you are absolutely right, the accents in Puerto Rico are extremely heavy and in some parts of Puerto Rico it can be very tough to communicate if you are not an expert fluent Spanish speaker. Like I mentioned in my video, I am not very fluent Spanish speaker even though I have been around the language my entire life. I learned a lot in school and thanks to my mother I can understand just about anything though I don’t practice speaking the language as much as I should. Are you like that as well with ASL? According to Ortega, instructional learners learn more through schooling. (Ortega,2011. Pg.6) Due to the fact, that you didn’t learn ASL in school, can you understand more than you speak?

  2. Jolie,
I am glad to have another class with you this semester and can't wait to graduate officially in May 2018. I really loved watching your video and it was very interesting. Many often times if students know English as their first language they are always interested in the second language their parents may know as well. However, many students don't take additional time to learn the background history behind the language like you did by visiting Puerto Rico. According to researchers, "One way to investigate humans’ capacities for learning second languages is to inspect the oral and written records learners produce when people use the new language." (Ortega, 2011, Pg. 6). I think researchers are right because the more people investigate in the certain second language they may be interested in knowing about then it is important that way they know what they may be learning about. And also have an encouragement of knowing something they may have never known about. That is really what you have done by going above and beyond and visiting your families originated country. I think you are really determined to learn new things and take every step you may have to in order to learn what you desire. I hope you continue to being successful and always stay successful!

  3. Un video muy interesante. ¿Cuál es su lugar favorito de la isla del encanto? ¿Escucha música en español? Music is a great way to learn a language. It helps with vocabulary, intonation and even pronunciation. What culture do you feel closer to?

  4. Hi Jolie, very pretty name by the way. I like that you are trying to learn Spanish and having to do that your mother knows Spanish is really a big help for you to learn the language. I have always wanted to go to Puerto Rico, I have heard that it is simply beautiful, and what a better place to visit if you want to practice your Spanish. According to Ortega if you want to learn a second language one should inspect the oral and written records learners produce when people use the new language. And what better way to speak the Spanish you know in Puerto Rico, which is a good way to practice and to brush up on your Spanish.
